Geelong Podiatrist, Amy Hawker Talks..Foot Health During Lockdowns.

A COVID lockdown can be a long time to take care of your own feet, but you may only miss one visit our local podiatrist in Geelong, Torquay and Ocean Grove, so here are some tips to take care of your own feet between podiatry appointments.

It may be difficult to do your own feet but if you can do your family’s or partner’s feet, hopefully, they will do yours in return.

  1. Wash your feet regularly, or soak them in a bowl of warm soapy water once a week. You can use EPSOM salts which can help soothe the muscles in both feet.

  2. Dry feet well on a towel and allow time to air dry before putting on socks and shoes.

  3. Once a week if possible, gently rub your feet with a foot file/rasp to remove dry/hard skin, especially on pressure points to avoid corns getting painful, heels and tips of toes, or edges of your foot.

  4. Moisturise after soaking or filing to rehydrate the skin, but don’t get any cream between your toes, as it can cause fungal problems. Use a good foot cream if possible, as that will absorb quicker than another cream, so avoiding slippery feet.

  5. Rather than cutting your nails if you don’t feel safe to, it’s a good idea to regularly use your foot file to give the nails a good file to keep them short and neat.

  6. If you need to cut your nails, use a good pair of clippers or nippers, trying to follow the gentle curve of your nail, do not cut into the corners or down the edges as it can cause ingrowing nail problems.
