Ocean Grove Podiatrist, Amy Hawker…..Talks overuse injuries and how to reduce the risk when usual activity returns..

Overuse injuries are common in many activities. They are injuries that happen when someone has increased level of training load, strict competition schedules or a lack of rest or recovery. Commonly these injuries occur with repetitive movements such as running or high impact actions such as jumping.

Generally, symptoms have a gradual onset, often starting with a little niggle. As someone continues training increased load is placed on the site of injury resulting in an inability to adequately heal the injury site.

Living in the Bellarine Pennisula and Geelong these overuse injuries are particularly common, as our community generally live an active lifestyle by the beach. Common overuse injuries that we see in our clinic include stress fractures, plantar fasciosis and achilles tendinosis, but we can help a range of conditions in our Torquay, Geelong and Ocean Grove Clinic.

So, how do we prevent these injuries from occurring as you increase activity as we return back to our sport or gym after COVID-19? The best way to prevent these injuries is through good preparation including regular training schedules that have an adequate strength or cross-training component.  Here at Stance Podiatry we would recommend a specific warm up program that activates muscles such as using a ball to roll under both feet and cool down program such as gentle stretching that is integrated into your routine. Managing other factors such as your footwear is also important.

Here at Stance Podiatry our team of trained podiatrist at Torquay, Ocean Grove and Geelong are trained to help prevent and manage overuse injuries if they do occur.

If you or someone you know is suffering from an overuse injury or would like to function more efficiently, our Torquay, Ocean Grove and Geelong team are here to help!
