Geelong Podiatrist and Sports Trainer, Amy Hawker talks Pre-season injury prevention for 2020!

Pre-season! It’s that time of year again – the season is about to kick off in April 2020 for many local football and netball clubs. Often, due to the increased training load often following a rest period, pre-season can mean a greater risk of injury. Some of the common ‘pre-season’ conditions we see at Stance Podiatry include heel pain, ankle sprains, blisters, shin splints, callus and Achilles Tendinopathy.

To help prevent foot problems this pre-season here are our top tips to follow:

1. Get fresh runners/boots!

Ideally try to replace your shoes every year. Exercising in excessively worn shoes leads to a greater risk of injury. Choosing the right shoes can also improve performance. Reputable stores such as The Athletes Foot have experienced staff who can provide advice on finding the best fit for you. If you wear orthotics, game socks or braces ensure you take them with you.

2. Blister prevention

Always wear socks as this will reduce friction between your skin and the shoe, which causes blisters. Changing into another pair of socks half way through a game or training can help stop friction and moisture. Use tape or padding on the areas prone to blisters to reduce friction. Having callus and corns removed or getting an orthotics device made by a podiatrist will also aid in reducing pressure on the feet.

4. Correct nail cutting

Ingrown toenails are so painful! especially if they get infected. Trim nails so they follow the edge of your nail bed (pink base of the nail) and avoiding digging down the sides. If you think you may have an ingrown toenail avoid the urge to remove it yourself and gives us a call as we can help!

5. Foot hygiene

Check your feet regularly, dry them thoroughly after showering and wear a clean pair of socks for every training session and game. Also wear thongs in the change rooms/shower to avoid picking up any nasties such as Tinea Pedis.

I hope you have a great season and don’t let foot pain get in the way of your performance. If you have any questions or need some help with your feet- please don’t hesitate to contact me!
